Many gardens have to be used by a variety of age groups. A family garden should be agreeable to everyone using it, whatever their age. Gardens make great play spaces fro children. Decide on a list of priorities and plan your garden accordingly. Here are some ideas for a great family garden.
- Having a patio means children have a dry places for play even in winter.
- If you have the space, a paved path circuit around your garden is a great all-weather track for bikes and ride-ons.
- If possible have a large lawn for ball games and play.
- If you have a greenhouse makes sure it is tucked as far away from the open play area as possible.
- Design in some outdoor storage for toys - timber bench seats with cupboards beneath, barbecues areas can make useful storage. Sandpits should be covered and include stowage areas.
- Play surfaces can be expensive and may require specialist installation but are importatant for safety. Bark can be used around climbing frames.
- Make a children's garden - set aside a small plot for plant growing. Grow fast favourites such as runner beans, radishes, experimental giants such as sunflowers.
- If you have the space, use lawn shapes to create quiet corners and bays that can be used for dens, tents etc.
